Road Agent is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings and drawings by London-based artist Dan Perfect, opening October 24 and running through December 6, 2008. Please join us for an artist’s reception on Friday, October 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Dan Perfect’s complex and beguiling paintings — and his exquisite works on paper which function as both complete and assured drawings as well as studies for the paintings — articulate a deep affection for a particularly European sensibility of painting from the high-modern era. In this they reclaim an innocence and freshness that is subtly sophisticated, echoing historical nuances ranging from Patrick Heron to Paul Klee, or from Raoul Dufy to Matisse and Braque.

Perfect’s knowledge of printmaking is evident in the deliberate mis-registering of color, line and space whereby pictorial ideas manifest as raw color or gesture — in counterpoint to cartooning and automatism reminiscent of André Masson and Arshile Gorky — that evoke the subconscious and dream-like state. Humor, darkness, figures and chaos vibrate throughout the bold brushwork, the delicate rhythms of shape, and the majestic color palette. The paintings resonate with enormous physical and emotional presence.

The beauty in Perfect’s paintings is apparent in its compositional cohesion and integrity; the apparently disparate painterly and psychological elements are brought together in an evocative painting space that relates as well to landscape as it does to painting’s recent history.

Perfect lives and works in London, England. This exhibition follows his very successful solo exhibition at the acclaimed and progressive Chisenhale Gallery in London. Perfect received his education from the Chelsea School of Art and St. Martins School of Art. Soon a series of Perfect’s paintings will be exhibited at the newly opened Saatchi Gallery in London, and Perfect is represented by One in the Other Gallery, London.
